City-Maxxing: The Luxury Travel Trend Where One City Is Never Enough
Luxury travelers are stringing multiple cities into longer, richer itineraries — and September is the new peak. Here's why one city is no longer enough, and how to plan a multi-city journey that actually flows.
If you've been dreaming of a trip where you see Rome and Paris, or Florence and the Greek Isles, you're not alone. There's a name for it now: city-maxxing.
Fresh data from Virtuoso, the world's leading luxury travel network, shows luxury travelers stringing multiple destinations into longer, richer, multi-city itineraries. One city is no longer enough.
Why It's Happening Now
September is the new summer. Virtuoso's September sales are up 77%, and affluent travelers are deliberately moving trips later in the year to escape peak-season crowds without sacrificing sunshine. In Europe, September bookings have grown nearly three times faster than August — and travelers are paying more for it, not less. Rates on the French Riviera are up 179%, the Greek Isles over 130%, Puglia 78%.
Longer trips, fewer of them. Nearly a third of luxury travelers are taking fewer but longer, higher-quality trips. When you're investing two or three weeks, why limit yourself to one destination?
The art of the corridor. The most popular pairings: France + Italy leads, followed by France + the UK, then Italy + Switzerland. Italy appears in two of every five multi-city luxury itineraries — Florence, Rome, and Venice anchoring routes like a string of pearls.
What It Looks Like in Practice
Picture this: three nights in Paris for art, food, and strolls along the Seine. A short hop to Florence, where a private driver meets you for a week of Tuscan hill towns and wine tastings. Finish with two nights in Rome — the Colosseum at sunset, dinner in Trastevere, a morning at the Vatican before flying home.
Or: London's theaters, a train through the countryside to the Swiss Alps, a final stretch lakeside in Como.
Multiple destinations, one coherent story, zero logistical headaches — when it's planned right.
The Catch (and Why It Matters)
Multi-city travel is where logistics get complicated: transfers between cities, hotel check-ins aligned with train schedules, that restaurant everyone's talking about booked before you even land, and breathing room so the trip feels like a vacation, not a marathon.
That's where a travel advisor earns their keep. At Dream in Color Travel, we design multi-city journeys that flow — the right time in each place, connections that make sense, experiences booked before you leave home.
